I do think that this is a good book for learning about couture techniques and when to use them, but my point of contention is the fact that,There are few photos showing how to get the desired results and a lot of written text, which I think is not good for any book involving construction of sewing. More attention to photos and diagrams should have been placed.I feel like you can get some couture vocabulary down and when to use but I don't think the actual techniques can be easily replicated from the book without further demonstration from outside sources thus I am disappointed (actually extremely disappointed) in this book (Claire B Shaeffer knows her stuff, This would be a master to learn from). I was fully expecting a couture book that would constantly be opened on my sewing table but this is not it. I really hope this book is revised with a lot more step by step visuals thus making it accessible and a library keepsake.I am torn about reviewing because the couture techniques presented are used in the couturier houses and once mastered and applied correctly will give your garments amazing results, as well there are few books dedicated to the art of couture sewing-that actually have couture techniques but I do not think you will learn the how to from this book so I cannot give it more stars.I would have also liked to see some emphasizes on sewing those amazing unstructures of crinolines/hoops-how they differ from modern day as opposed to the olden times and of course best sewing practices. I see some of the dresses walk down the runway and I am always curious as to the production of them. I did not take off for that though as I understand an entirely different book may need to be dedicated towards the subject.Overall review of couture techniques yesHow to get the desired results no.Is It Worth It? More Content:over thirty more pages of content added as a result of the author's recent research.3. More images:Claire added more images to illustrate instructions, and they are invaluable!4. Improved instructions:Clearly marked step-by-step instructions for all processes of couture construction. If you own the previous edition, you know how the instructions were presented in run-on paragraphs making it difficult to use the book as a quick reference.5. More how-to illustrations:6. Claire's Hints:Excellent short tips, mostly absent in the previous edition.7. contemporary couture techniques from the worksrooms of Ralph Rucci and James Galanos8. techniques by Mainbocher and Charles Frederick Worth: Shaeffer says in her acknowledgements that she worked on a research project that focused on Mainbocher and Worth. She seems to have added some of the new techniques as a result of this research9. New chapter "Designing with Fabric": Shaeffer introduced this chapter to demonstrate "a variety of design ideas and specific techniques to inspire you to use fabrics more creatively". A master of observation, Claire describes techniques used in haute couture garments by Antonio Canovas del Castilo, Hubert de Givenchy, Chanel, Worth, Hanae Mori, I. Magnin, Balenciaga, Victor Edelstein, These techniques are not necessarily obvious, but so easy to learn and to apply in your own garments. This is an amazing book the info and content terrific but the photographs and drawings have not been rescaled or compiled to be used on the kindle version. When you expand the photos to get the detail the author is discussing the resolution is poor and pixilated.It detracts from an otherwise good book. It doesn't do the format any credit either.
Can I arrange to *be* Ms Shaeffer in my next life. I so admire her skills; both sewing & writing SKILLS! Between #3 to 5 on my list as to what I’m leaving WITH in event of a fire. I would absolutely recommend this tome for any skilled sewer. Great reference. Will have no more than arms reach away while I am working on any garment of any type. The instructions are easily transferred to multiple types of sewing.
