One way we can help kids get along, be considerate and seek kindness is by teaching them empathy. When teachers and parents ask me for book resources teaching this character trait - Stand in My Shoes is now at the top of my list. This book went above and beyond my expectations. It is concrete, kids related to the story, and it started impacting kids behavior immediately. L O V E. I would love to see a whole series of kids books from author Bob Sornson. He got this one SO right!

Not a terrible book, but the examples used to portray empathy did not make a lot of sense. Also did not like the relationship between siblings in this book. In hindsight, I would have chosen a different book to teach kids about empathy.

I bought this book after my kindergartener started getting in trouble at school for being rough with the other kids. I thought the concept wouldn’t make sense at her age but it worked. Since reading it (every night) she hasn’t had any trouble at school. I asked her what changed and she told me it was reading this book. She asked if I would continue to read it to remind her to think about other people. I just added a few more empathy books to our rotation but this one will always hold a special place in my heart.

I love this book! It's an excellent learning tool to discuss with small grade school children the importance of emphathy. You can also use this book as a stepping stone to go one step further. I plan to read this to my son's class and afterwards make emphathy bracelets. The packaging was excellently done. Though it's a soft book, the firm high quality plastic prevented it from bending. It also came with a pencil and a list of other suggested resources. I'm super excited to share it's lesson. The first page alone defines emphathy by definition in a story format between an older and younger sister and continues to incorporate the meaning through out the story through the younger sisters day and thoughtfulness

I liked everything about this book, and so did my 7 year old daughter. Illustrations were cute, story was clear and well written. I put it up there with that "have you filled a bucket today" book. Now my daughter knows about empathy, and likes to practice what she's learned. And when she forgets, we read it again. We need more cool books like this on the market that teach a certain mindfulness. Today it seems there are so many kids running rampant thinking its all about them... Either that, or it's the typical nature of them until taught otherwise.

Good illustrations, good concept and nice presentation. Using it in therapy I find some of the scenarios however unrealistic. A child wouldn't usually ask a teacher in the midst of a class why they are sad, and most likely the teacher would not respond with, her dog died. I none the less used it in therapy even discussing those points. So it does the job and we were able to discuss what we felt worked.

It is okay. I was hoping for more. Basically, a girl named Emily interrupts her big sister while her big sister is trying to study. Her big sister tells her to have some empathy and explains what that means. Emily then spends the next day being nice to everyone and trying to notice their feelings. At the end, she says it changed something inside of her.

The situations in the book are real enough but have been condensed to happen in one day which is simply not the way things happen. Third graders found the book a bit too wordy and busy. Though the message is an important one, perhaps it would be best read with a child one-to-one or with a small group, rather than a whole class.
