Coming from a family that has subscribed to House Beautiful for generations, it is such a pleasure to see a tome for the magazine's most-recent generation. Sophie Donelson has not just thrown together some of the prettiest images from the magazine, she's curated them in such a way that distills the elements of what makes a home beautiful–be it a splash of color, a grand gesture, or that personal touch. It's a feast for the eyes, nurturing to the nester, and has more than enough tips & tricks that aren't just "things to buy", they're "ideas to try". While I have my fair share of gorgeous coffee table design books, this is one of a handful that is not just "Beautiful", but achievable. For anyone looking for inspiration (rather than aspiration), this is a must buy!
I subscribe to House Beautiful and enjoy it as typically more approachable to everyone than some other similar magazines. However, for me, this book falls a little flat.The book has 8 chapters, each one sharing a "style secret" starting with "Every Room Needs":* A splash of unexpected color* A nod to the past* A grand gesture* Glitter and Gleam* To embrace the great outdoors* something that says "touch me"* Something that speaks to only you* A "Wow Moment"Within each chapter, there are tips to support the theme of the chapter. For example, in "Something that Speaks Only to You", the ideas are displaying things that make you happy, hanging old portraits, a place to be a kid or act like one, a workstation, a place to nestle, a family porch, etc...I feel like the photos are a disjointed jumble. While they do illustrate the authors point, photos with completely different colors or decor are placed on the same page or adjoining page, so the impact of the photo is lost and it just feels like a mess. Also, while the photos are beautiful, they don't really give an idea of how I might use the style secret in my own home.
I have a collection of home design books and would say this one is not my favorite, by a long shot. The pictures are of decorated spaces in the extreme and don't illustrate how people actually live. They are austere, unattainable, and over the top. Not what I expected.
If you are like me a reader of shelter magazines, there's no reason to buy this book. The photos are nice, but the copy isn't very enlightening. Keep reading those magazines.
