I used it for a textbook in my university education. The book is very well written. I can tell the man has a passion and did his research on the topic. He has real life experience. I can tell you from my own experience, he's correct on why homosexuals are homosexuals for one. I've studied why they are who they are and my own observations agree with his conclusions for why they are who they are. Notice there are dead set negative view on the book and dead set positive views. That's because he's right. They're fighting the correct opinions because they're afraid of the truth. If it were just an "ok" book there would be in between stars not all negative views.

Well written and well researched

In the midst of the ELCA's convulsions over sexuality issues, as one can see from the reviews of this book, one's convictions decide how one rates this book. Having read a great deal of what is available on this topic for the past two decades, Dave's book is well-balanced, scholarly honest and compassionate. If you have your mind made up about the "rightness" of homosexuality, neither Scripture nor argument are going to change your mind; however, if you're an honest seeker, trying to understand the biblical material, you will find this book very, very helpful.

In a comprehensive, readable, and gracious essay, David Glesne describes the phenomenon of homosexuality in the context of the modern church and society. He does not cater to political correctness, yet demonstrates Christian love and faithfulness. A must read for anyone interested in this subject.

Although this book was written to help pastors of churches reach out to the broken and teach truth and compassion to their members on the subject of homosexuality, it has important information for any Christian seeking how to talk with homosexual friends, family, or church members. It covers myths, views from both sides of the issue, interpretations and their flaws, analogy arguments, and how to be communities of grace AND truth. The text is engaging and challenging, solid and comprehensive with strong Biblical base. Have a pen and notebook ready - you'll want to take notes.

As a lifelong Lutheran I repudiate this bookThis book is entirely negative in its treatment of homosexuality. The author, a Lutheran pastor, expressed as 'myths' the ideas that homosexuals are created that way, that they can be happy and well adjusted Christians, all as a way to explain why the church need not concern itself with these children of God. Glesne describes sexual practices with debasing and demeaning terms all of which is un-necessary to his book. He is obviously pandering to homophobic feelings. He quotes a single study that shows that homosexuals can be changed to heterosexuals through reparative therapy which is not recommended by American Psychiatric Association policy.

In Glesne's words, this book was written with three groups of people in mind: (1) the non-specialist, thinking, but confused Christian in the pew, (2) the suffering homosexual, and (3) those who have fully embraced their homosexuality. If, as the subtitle indicates, this book is to be seen as a serious set of "perspectives for the local church" then the people in the pews are in for a rather rough ride and the suffering homosexual will take a pounding. Those who have fully embraced their homosexuality will probably emerge okay, but no thanks to Glesne.Even though he purports to "speak the truth in love," it is hard to regard Glesne's prurient glossary of sex acts in the third chapter as anything other than an insidious attempt to discredit all gay relationships. He says in chapter 13 "The Church is to be full of grace," but a few lines later, suggests that the gay/lesbian idea of family is "destructive of persons, destructive of family, and [will] lead toward the decay of society." This attitude is an impediment to understanding and does nothing to reflect grace, the compassion of Christ, or a welcoming community for persons who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender--or anyone else for that matter.
